Junk Mail and Propaganda- I am sick of political ads

Is anyone else ready for this election to be over?

I swear this has been the longest midterm in the history of midterms.

This week starts early voting and I say, “Thank God!” I am so tired of these people.

And I’m so tired of these stupid ads. Every five seconds I’m seeing another political ad and my mailbox is overrun by the mailers.

The junk mail doesn’t even make it inside my house most of the time since I dump them in the trash bin on the way from the mailbox. Has no one ever told these candidates that direct mail campaigns only generate about 3% of engagement? That means, for every 100 mailers you send, you will get three people who actually read the stupid thing.

They’re pointless.

I’m fortunate that since I stopped watching live TV, I don’t see as many of the ads on the streaming services. I don’t pay for the subscription levels that are ad-free, but I don’t get the volume as on regular network television, either.

With that said, I chuckle every time I see them because every candidate is saying the exact same thing about the other.

Corporate money? Check.

Not our values? Check.

Cutting services? Check.

Corruption? Check.

Unethical business practices? Check.

I wonder, if everyone is doing the exact same thing then where does our choice lie?

McCain Feingold attempted in the early 2000s to rein in the overwhelming money in campaigns. But in limiting the donations, we saw a rise of all of the political action committees that have become even more entrenched in the propaganda game.

And they are all full of hot air.

We know that political ads will never tell us the truth. But how much of the hype can be built up by a well-placed slogan?

Think of the 2024 campaign, “Kamala is for they/them. Trump is for you.”

That one helped win the election.

So as long as that one slogan or praise or insult might work, we’ll have the litany.

We have two more weeks and then we get a break for about six months until the 2028 campaign starts.

God help us.
