This last month before the midterm elections is seeing Trump take to the road. Though this is a normal occurrence for the President to stump for his party in tightly contested races, what is not normal is for a Republican president to have to shore up his base in places like Texas and Nebraska because the candidates are struggling. It’s also not normal for the Republican Texas governor, who is in his own tight race, to part ways and refuse to appear with the Republican president. But that is what is happening with Greg Abbot, citing a “scheduling conflict”.
Why?
Because Trump is losing this election.
This isn’t about the rise in socialism as the MAGA crowd would love to claim. This is about people from Trump’s own party jumping ship. Trump is out there trying to convince us that we are in a golden age. Everything we are seeing and feeling says that he’s wrong.
He’s trying to gaslight us, and so many of us are seeing the reality. It tells us that everything he has said is, at least, a serious misrepresentation of the facts or, at most, a lie.
As is so often the case, the dung is running downhill to every Republican who has propped up this failed agenda and every candidate Trump stands beside.
And two years in, he can no longer blame Biden. Our current situation is because of his policies alone.
While 79% of Republicans support the Iran War, the reality is that 65% of voters as a whole disagree with it. In 2024, Trump won the popular vote by only 1.5%. A 65% disapproval of any action is a potential death knell where the Electoral College is not in play.
As a result of the Iran War, regular gasoline has increased by 31.4% since 2024 and diesel by 64.9%. Before someone points out our oil production in the US, it is important to consider that we cannot refine our own oil here because we don’t own the technology to do so, which means we have to sell it overseas and their oil comes here. As a result, until we increase our refining capabilities, we will never be energy-independent.
With the increased costs of both grain and fuel (especially the fuel because you need it to bring in the grain) along with the impact of drought, ranchers are being significantly hit. As a result, beef prices are up 8-12% year over year with the US Department of Agriculture estimating another 7-10% increase before all is said and done.
Yale University estimates that the Trump tariffs are costing the average household $1,100 to $3,800 annually. These increased costs disproportionately affect lower-income households because the costs of these goods make up a higher percentage of the overall household budget.
Everything is going up with no relief in sight. Trump tells us the war is almost over but after eight months of those promises, we have become road-weary. He tells us the economy is good and the populace is prospering but our bank accounts tell a different story.
I would like to vote my morals and principles, but the reality is that morals and principles don’t keep a roof over my head and food on my table. So, yes, I’m voting from my bank account.
And I’m voting against the man who has lied to me.
I heard a political commentator say that it is normal for the tide to turn 6 years into a presidency. He pointed out that we are on year 11 for Trump. We are tired. We are disheartened.
In 2006, George W Bush’s approval rating was at 39%, the lowest in history going into a midterm election. At that time, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not going well and economically, we were struggling.
Twenty years later, history is repeating itself. Trump’s rating? 31-39%.
So prepare to see a sea of blue on November 3rd because those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it.
