Y’all, pull up a chair. Let’s chat.
So what is up with Madonna?
She has a new album out and she’s been promoting it everywhere. Times Square. World Cup finals. TV appearances.
That’s great. I’m glad she’s still out there making music.
My problem is with her lace bustier, thigh boots, and sexualized performances.
She’s 67 years old y’all.
I have no problem with being sexy later in life. If you can pull it off, I say go for it. Unfortunately, she cannot.
No 67 year old woman needs to be crawling out from between inflatable legs that are spread to show Virginia. No 67 year old woman hiking her leg over a barricade and simulating a sex act on that barrier. No 67 year old woman needs to dress like she just got down from the stripper pole. And if have arthritic joints and batwing arms, please don’t try to dance like you’re in your 20s.
It does not look sexy and only appears as a pathetic attempt at recapturing something that’s long gone- your youth.
In the same World Cup show, 49 year old Shakira showed that her lips still don’t lie. At 43 years old, Cher proved that she could turn back time in a body stocking and leather jacket. Jennifer Lopez is on the floor in thongs that leave little to the imagination and still pulls it off. Tina Turner was proud marying all the way into her 70s.
Unfortunately, Madonna is not like a virgin and instead looks like she’s ready for mah jong at the retirement home.
It’s okay to embrace your age. It took me years to accept my gray hair and now I wear it with pride. It doesn’t make me any less of who I am and if I want to feel sexy and attractive it takes nothing away from me in doing so. Madonna can still put out her music and do her performances and enjoy life. Have the hot sexy dancers around her and be the femme fatale in the middle of it all. It would only enhance the performance instead of turning it into a joke.
We try so hard to turn back the clock on our aging only to find that the clock is running faster than we are. It’s okay to be who you are. That age means you have wisdom and experience that someone younger doesn’t have. Embrace your status.
For Madonna, the fact that she is trying so hard to be who she no longer is a sad commentary on our culture where someone feels it’s not okay to age gracefully. She has had a decades long career of some incredible music. It’s sad really that her accomplishments are not enough. Is it something in her psyche or have we made her feel this way?
