The Sun’ll Come Out- Let’s keep daylight savings

The House of Representatives has taken the first step in stopping the clock this week when they voted 308-117 to pass the Sunshine Protection Act which would make Daylight Savings Time as the yearlong standard.

It’s about time!

Since 1918, the US has used the time change in order to allow an extra hour of daylight during the growing season, allowing more time for farmers to work their crops. At the time it was enacted, we had an economy based on more agriculture. With the increase in technology that makes working the crops much more efficient, the need for this extra hour has waned. In addition, farming is a much smaller portion of our overall economic future.

The problem we face now is that the majority of us like that extra hour of sunshine in the evening. And if you’re like me, that switch back and forth messes up your internal clock for weeks out of the year.

Additional daylight is also effective in reducing depression and inflammation because it increases natural production of seratonin in the brain. I have a chronic illness that depends on my levels staying stable to keep flares at a minimum and those levels are more stable when the rays are beaming down.

I am one of those people that has my drapes open and natural light pouring in my windows, the more the better because it just makes me happy and well.

Either way would have ultimately been fine with me as long as we didn’t have to do the spring forward and fall back every dang year. Our biorhythms depend on the natural cycles of day and night and we are healthier when those cycles exist. To mess with the natural order of how our bodies are designed to work decreases our overall wellbeing.

I am glad, though, that the choice was to give us that extra hour at the end of the day. Bring on the dinner time vibes.

It doesn’t mean that we won’t have short days in the winter because we will but at least we can get home from work before the moon comes out.

The fact that I wish Congress would take care of more pressing matters, they at least proved they are capable of coming together on something. Now the bill is on to the Senate where those old men need to get to voting. Time’s a-wastin’, folks.
