For those who have lived in hiding for the past two years- or who don’t give a flying fig about pop culture- Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni reached a settlement in their ongoing legal battle, just two weeks before entering court.
The crux of the case is that Baldoni produced, directed, and starred in a movie titled “It Ends With Us”, based on the Colleen Hoover novel about domestic violence. His costar was Ms Blake Lively of Gossip Girl fame, wife of Ryan Reynolds (aka Deadpool) and best friend of Taylor Swift. During the promotion of the film, Lively was blasted for promoting her haircare line of products during the tour of the film about a very serious subject. It was seen as tone deaf. Lively filed suit against Baldoni, his studio, and his publicist saying they were engaging in a smear campaign because she was set to expose them for sexual harassment and creating a toxic work environment on set.
Baldoni then filed suit against Lively for defamation. And thus the drama began.
For two years, Lively and her attorneys have engaged in a campaign to, in my opinion, destroy Baldoni. Baldoni has stayed quiet throughout, letting his attorneys do the fighting.
As part of the discovery process leading up to the court case, videos and emails and text messages were released that showed that Lively was, in fact, the problem. Throughout filming, she made every attempt to basically steal the movie from Baldoni and completely control the filming process. She engaged in sowing seeds of discord among the cast and divided the friendship between Baldoni and the author, Hoover. She further went through all of her Hollywood friends to get them on her side and blackball him in the entertainment business. The videos she presented for evidence of the sexual harassment showed nothing inappropriate. The texts and emails demonstrated her as the aggressor.
Everyone watching all of this play out were crushed when the judge dismissed Baldoni’s defamation suit and allowed Lively’s to continue. And then just a month before court, the judge gutted Lively’s case and dismissed every part of it except the provisions that pointed to nothing more than a contract dispute.
On Monday of this week, she settled the $350 million lawsuit for zero money and a joint statement of the parties involved. There was no non disclosure agreement as part of the settlement, leaving Baldoni and his attorneys the right to speak out.
That night, she showed up at the Met Gala, looking victorious. This, in fact, was a defeat.
What this whole saga demonstrates is that the Me Too Movement is dead. At its height, the mantra was “believe all women” and it shown a spotlight on the pervasiveness of sexual harassment by men in power in Hollywood against women. This case shows that practice of always believing the accusations as a fallacy because not all women are actual victims. Some are simply mean girls who would use this concept and allegations such as these to get what they want. For Lively, that was Baldoni’s movie.
The sad part of all of it is that his career is in ruins because of her machinations. Hers is no more because she has the reputation for being a difficult diva and no one will trust her now. Her husband’s has suffered because of his involvement in the campaign against Baldoni. And every woman who is truly a victim of a sexual predator has been diminished because of a highly public false accusation.
Even more, It Ends With Us was a good movie that highlighted the sensitive topic of domestic violence. The movie has now become an entry in the vault of Hollywood scandals. And every woman who would have benefited from the impact of the movie are relegated to a footnote in one woman’s story.
