I had planned to write a different column today until I woke up and was hit with the news that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the royal formerly known as prince, had been arrested on charges of suspicion of misconduct in public office, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. These charges arise out of his association with Jeffrey Epstein and involves possible sharing of classified information from his time as a trade envoy for the British government.
Andrew’s decades-long friendship with Epstein has been under deep scrutiny for years, first coming to light in 2011 with the public accusations of Virginia Giuffre that he had sex with her when she was underage. In a disastrous interview on BBC, he denied even knowing her, despite pictures to the contrary. I will acknowledge that Virginia made accusations against other men that she later walked back, admitting that her recollections were incorrect. It is the nature of trauma that some events might be recalled differently than they actually happened; however, the details she shared and the photographic evidence support her claims against Andrew. Further, the settlement he paid to her further supports her version of events.
Sadly, it’s not that charge that sees Andrew facing a legal battle, but rather basically an act of treason. Especially when considering that new evidence shows that Epstein had influence with multiple government officials around the world, sharing this information was not just for the benefit of lining pockets but could have potentially been used for other nefarious purposes that could undermine the British government.
So why is this the final nail in Andrew’s coffin and not sexual deviance with underage girls? Perhaps it’s because this charge can’t be dismissed as a specious allegation by a woman with known mental health struggles. It doesn’t come down to a he said/she said scenario. There is direct communication and documentation for this charge. Of course it all will require adjudication to reach a final conclusion. With that said, I have one response to this latest news- it’s about damn time.
I preface my next remarks by saying that association with Jeffrey Epstein does not equate to complicity in his illegal activities. He was a man of means who had connections all over the world and made a lot of people piles of money through legitimate means. Having your name appear in the files does not mean you did anything wrong. It simply means you knew the man. With that said, continued association with him after 2008 when the world finally knew he liked sex with young girls means you’re either in denial, complicit, or don’t care. Any of these states is atrocious. Let me also say that classifying Epstein as a pedophile is a personal, and accurate, judgement even though the law never classified him as such because it specifically labels sex with children under 13 years old as falling into that category. Finally, accusations are not proof- evidence is.
In the case of Andrew, the most recent document dump not only shows ongoing communication indicating a deep friendship and intimate personal knowledge but also Andrew engaging in “activities” with these girls. You cannot claim ignorance when you’re looking at the camera. You cannot claim ignorance when it’s your signature on the email.
Sadly, I don’t think a single man who is shown to have engaged in these sexual practices will ever face criminal penalties. Why? Because they are powerful men with a lot of money and influence. For Andrew, himself, it took 11 years from when these allegations first surfaced before Queen Elizabeth revoked his medals and patronages. He was still allowed to keep his titles and his mansion. In 2025, King Charles finally revoked those. Even then, he still insisted on his staff continuing to address him by his title and has continuously claimed the estate he’s been relegated to is not to his standards.
In all his life, he has reportedly treated all those not of the aristocracy as beneath him. He has continuously engaged in underhanded practices to secure money and position for himself. He has bullied his way around the world. He was a serial philanderer. And the queen’s favorite son has never once been held to account for his actions.
I hope that the events of today will be a wake up call for him but I sincerely doubt it. When you believe that you are above the law because of your status then subjection to the law is outside of your wheelhouse. The only thing that will have any lasting impact is waking up daily in a 10×10 cell. Even then, a coward can escape like Epstein did, at the end of a sheet. It may be the only judgement will be the one that God delivers.
