I am fascinated by true crime. I watch news and listen to podcasts. I follow high-profile cases. I binge-watch Dateline. I think it comes from a perverted sense of puzzle-solving where I want to look at all of the elements of the case to reach a conclusion on who did the crime.
The latest puzzle for me is the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. I honestly can’t get enough. It doesn’t cone out of any prurient interest. I am sincerely heartbroken for what her family and friends are enduring now. I can’t imagine the fear and uncertainty and trauma they are feeling. My interest comes from the questions in the case and the apparent mistakes that have been made. So let me dive in to where my thoughts are going at this moment.
When I had heard that her family was alerted by friends when she did not show up for church on Sunday then it was revealed that she had not been in person since COVID and watched the livestream, I considered how someone could have indeed known. Commentators have posited that there’s no way anyone would have known she wasn’t watching. I thought about how if I’m watching my church’s livestream on YouTube no one would know but my church also runs the livestream on Facebook which would display my name to whoever is monitoring it. Then yesterday, a report surfaced that, in reality, she was due at a friend’s house and didn’t show up and that makes total sense.
I also had a question about the time stamp of the garage door when she got home being used as a definitive timeline of her arrival on Saturday night. I didn’t understand how this could be proof she got home at a certain time because my own garage door can be opened from an app on my phone, and I don’t have to be anywhere near the house.
I’ve questioned why the local sheriff’s office released the crime scene less than 24 hours after her disappearance, allowing for possible contamination of the scene and opening the door for acquittal if a suspect is ever charged.
I wonder why a grid search around her house was cancelled only a day later. If you haven’t found her then you keep searching, in my opinion. Why was her car not removed from the property for a week? Why was the FBI searching the sister’s house at night? Why are they just now getting DNA samples for the people who came in and out of Nancy’s house, 10 days after-the-fact?
I consider why the ransom notes were sent to the media instead of the police. I look at the affectation of the people involved and question actions and motives.
In the beginning, we saw the sheriff all over our televisions. It’s a high-profile case with the relative of a celebrity. He accepted every interview where he was invited. He was crap in every single appearance, showing his clear lack of media training. I feel he saw an opportunity for his own celebrity and mucked up the case as a result. Then, still in a critical time of investigation, he decides to go to a basketball game. That was not a good look. Today, we learned that it was days before he allowed the FBI to come in. Early on, we were told that there was no archive from the doorbell camera because Nancy didn’t have monitoring from the company and now today we have a video of a masked man with a gun, gloves, and a backpack at her door on the morning she disappeared. It was through the resources of the FBI that the video was able to be retrieved. We should have had this information a week ago. Furthermore, it was also reported today that the pilot for the search plane had been put on street patrol and was never brought in for an air search because of a disagreement with the sheriff. Personnel dynamics should never infringe on the investigation.
I hate to say it, but I don’t believe this will have a happy ending. It was 41 minutes from the time the cameras were disabled to when her pacemaker stopped syncing with her watch. I don’t see it taking that long to spirit her away from the house. From the tone of the third and fourth videos, I believe that Savannah realizes her mother is likely deceased, even as she is trying to hold onto some hope. I believe there are inconsistencies in the stories of the sister and brother-in-law that lead to the search of their home and impounding of their car. Yes, they were the last ones to have seen her so they inevitably have to be investigated. I hope to God they aren’t involved. I do, however, believe the perpetrator(s) are somehow connected to Nancy or the family. I don’t believe this is random. I think the ransom notes are a means for someone connected to the family to monetize the tragedy, even if they aren’t directly tied to the kidnapping. My reasoning in this opinion is because they knew exactly where to go for maximum exposure.
The missteps in the beginning of this investigation cost valuable time. Those missteps could potentially lead an evil to walk away free. What this whole situation undeniably demonstrates to all of us is that no one is insulted from tragedy. I am encouraged to know that Savannah has a strong faith because it is only through that faith that she will be able to eventually find some measure of peace.
