Opinions and outtakes on today’s news

Entitled

Sunday night was golden when Hollywood gathered for the Golden Globe awards. I’ll admit I didn’t watch. Oh I used to love these shows until the movies became so obscure that no one except the judges have seen them and all the celebrities take their time at the mic to lecture the world on public policy. If you want to be a politician then run for office. So I didn’t watch. But I love checking out the pundits who are doing the post-game reporting.

What I learned on tonight’s review was that Sean Penn decided to chain smoke in a room full of people. He was allegedly asked multiple times to stop and he continued to light up. Reports are that his water glass was full of cigarette butts. He’s sitting at a dinner table in a public venue in a city with strict regulations and hundreds of people surrounding him and he can’t be bothered to walk one hundred freaking feet to the outdoor balcony designated as a smoking area specifically for the ceremony.

What’s more, not a single one of his colleagues asked him to stop because god forbid he lower himself to honor the wishes of the staff.

And this is why we hate so many of these celebrities. If only Sean was as good a human as he was an actor!

In an industry that allowed Harvey Weinstein to do his deeds for decades with no accountability, this is just a small example of the feeling of entitlement prevalent in Hollywood. They feel that since we pay to see them on the big screen they can act any way they want with no one calling them on their crap- because no one does. They gave a standing ovation to Will Smith after he assaulted Chris Rock on stage. They partied with Sean Combs, knowing he was a domestic abuser. And these are just a few of the offenders.

If they put money in your pocket, they are untouchable.

Where is the moral high ground? Where are those who will look at Sean Penn and say, “put down the damn cigarette”? Sadly, they’ve seen that speaking against the legends means burning your own career to the ground.

I’m getting to the point, myself, where I have no desire to actually watch their movies, knowing who they are off-screen. Give me a Matthew McConaughey any day. All reports are that he’s a nice guy IRL.
