I hadn’t planned a blog for today but felt the need to share, given the events of the past 24 hours. We’ve had the shooting at Brown University. We’ve had the massacre of Jews celebrating the beginning of Hanukkah. And we had the brutal murder of Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife. It’s been a long and emotional weekend.
But I’m not going to focus on these specific events. I want to focus on the words of our president in commenting on one of these events. On Truth Social, he wrote that Reiner’s death was attributed to the anger he elicited in others through his Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Oh. My. God. These words are so incredibly narcissistic, to think that a man’s murder is about you. And then when you find out the truth that the couple’s son is the alleged murderer and that he literally brutalized them, you double down and reiterate that he deserved it because of his political views.
Mr Trump, even people who voted for you are ashamed.
And then to look back and see the words that Rob Reiner spoke publicly after Charlie Kirk’s death where he said he was horrified when he saw the video and that no one deserved what happened to him, no matter his political leanings, you see a distinct difference.
Rob Reiner showed compassion for someone with whom he disagreed.
But our president who should set the example for the country is incapable of doing the same for the Reiner family.
How tragic.
I wrote yesterday on decency and saw today decency in short supply. As a Christian, I live not by the golden rule of treat others as you wish them to treat you, but by the Jesus rule to treat others as Jesus commands me to do- to love my neighbor as myself. But even for someone who is not a Christian, there is the basic idea of just showing humanity. Sadly, what our president did today failed in that endeavor.
